   Step 1

   Soil

   Radish grows underground — loosen soil a foot deep and remove clods. Avoid fresh manure; it causes forked roots.

   Sow

   0.5 inch deep in rows 6 inches apart.

   Thin

   After 10 days keep one seedling every 4–6 inches (thinnings make good greens).

   Earth up

   Hill soil around roots that push above ground.

   Water

   Keep moisture even — irregular watering makes radish split or turn pungent.

   Harvest

   Pull at full size, 40–50 days. Late roots go hollow.
